Just a thought.

I bought this. I don't think it has an HDMI connection. However, I noticed that most HD Ready TVs seem to have a USB connection these days. Would I be able to connect this device to a TV with USB?

You could connect it. Probably wouldn't get any picture though.

Most of the TV USB ports are extremely limited in their functionality. Some will do nothing - and don't ask me why they even put 'em on the set, I don't have a clue - to being able to viewing pics in a slide show from a thumb drive, playing mp3 music and a very few possibly playing a video "if" it's in the right format. Haven't kept up with USB capabilities the last 2-3 years, so there could be some out there that allow for media players of some type to be connected.

Still not delivered yet :(

Tracking says it left the Depot 12 miles away at 06:45 this morning. It is now 11:08.

Should I send out search parties? ;D

It arrived!

Only 5 hours to get 13 miles. :)

It works. Now watching Avatar again - extended version.

Nice picture, only the occasional stutter.

Only problem is the subtitles seem to get covered by the picture. Each time someone speaks, I see the subtitles and then they get hidden again. Might be just this film. Oddly enough the Castellano ones work better. Shame my Spanish is not that good ;D

The other problem is that I know Avatar so well the actual film is a bit predictable.

So what else should I try? Harry Potter? Star Wars? Terminator2?

Others?

I suspect a devilish plot :Mischievous:

I bought a Blu-Ray Player and one Blu-Ray disk (Avatar - which I have on DVD). These worked together perfectly.

So I went shopping and bought several other Blu-Ray disks. The first one of these (Hanna, which was released yesterday and I haven't seen yet) does not play. It plays for a few seconds, then stops, then plays another few seconds, then stops, etc.

So now, unless the other disks are fine and this one is faulty, I have little choice but to go out and buy a new TV and another Blu-Ray Player. How annoying.

Do I need a full HD or is HD Ready enough? Not sure I really understand the difference yet. :\

If I remember the difference, HD Ready doesn't have a Tuner for over the air reception and HD does. So, if you get your HD through cable or sattellite, or Blu-ray/DvD then HD Ready (what they used to call a TV monitor) is fine.

Third disk (Star Trek) plays fine, apart from refusing to give audio in English. It defaults to German and I can get Spanish, but no English other than a commentary track.

Fourth disk (GI Joe) seems fine so far.

So it seems the software is very variable. Not a real substitute for a TV/Blu-Ray Player combination. The Player came with some software, but I am guessing that is Windows only.

My first choice of disk seems to have been a lucky guess :Smirk:

Edit - GI Joe is playing even better than Avatar did. No hesitations so far.

I have to admit that when it works the picture is terrific :)

The one you got that was released yesterday, now you're finding out about the studios continuously coming out with new keys - and why the app wants internet access to download the new encryption keys. If this company is going to attempt and stay on top of it, try it again in a week or two. We'll find out how fast they are to get new releases working in their player.

I tried installing the PowerDVD that came with the Player on XP in Parallels.

Needless to say it didn't work as Parallels graphics driver isn't up to it. XP could see the external drive and read the disk, but I could not get PowerDVD to use the external drive. The option to change default drive was grayed out.

Back to the new TV/Blu-Ray Player option unfortunately - with the option to play some disks on my Mac, especially if I learn German or Spanish :)

Edit - I tried dragging the external drive from Explorer onto the PowerDVD screen - then it reported that the graphics driver was not good enough - so that is a way to run a Blu-Ray disk, assuming your hardware is OK.

So I gave way and bought a new TV and Blu-Ray Player.

Watching Hanna now - works on these :)

Not relevant to this Forum but just for information - I bought a Sony 32BX320 TV and a Sony BDP-S380 Player.

Looking good so far. The only problem is in order to see the TV properly (even a large screen) I need to wear my distance glasses. In order to use the computer I need my reading glasses.

The perils of age :)
