I'm using like the first ever sonyhandycam

Im all hooked up to my mac, FCP 7 open. Will not recognise the device and upload?
When i go into about this mac and 'more info' under 'USB' It says it's there.
At a bit of a loss, I've tried it on both USB stream and USB memory Stick but FCP and IMOVIE just won't have it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as have a wedding tape I am trying to upload.
