Is there a way to test my optical drive on my G5 to see if it is operating correctly?

erm.... put a disk in it

but seriously, a can of air duster or cleaner cd might help

iMacs having slot loading optical drives have a high failure rate when compared to tray loaders in desktops like the Mac Pro and PowerMac. You might try to boot from Apple Hardware Test on the original system discs.
