Create partition on USB drive w/o losing data?

I have a 500GB USB drive that has about 200GB free, and I'd like to create an 8GB partition to restore an image to to boot from...is there a way to create this partition without erasing any of my existing data on the drive?

2017 27" iMac, 10.5" iPad Pro, iPhone 8, iPhone 11, iPhone 12 Mini, Numerous iPods, Monterey
What file format is the drive using? If you're using HFS+, Disk Utility can create a partition without destroying data.
