Hello Everyone,

I would like to know if there is a way to port on X11 ABAQUS (Finite Element Software).

I asked abaqus support about it and they said they do not support anything that is not win or linux, so I asked if i could port to x11 the linux version and they said they did not know how.

so now it is down one of you mac gurus, of course if it possible.

Cheers

Moved to a more appropriate forum.

We would need a lot more information than what you've provided. What toolkit does it use? If it's QT, you may be able to install QT and try to build against that. If it's GTK, you may have more issues.

Please provide more details about the structure and libraries used by the application.

Thanks vansmith.

What do you mean by "toolkit" (QT or GTK)? I think that you refer to graphic interface, sorry my deep ignorance.

if so how can i found out?

Thanks

The Abaqus wikipedia entry has the following line.

"The Abaqus products use the open-source scripting language Python for scripting and customization. Abaqus/CAE uses the fox-toolkit for GUI development."

The Fox-toolkit wikipedia entry says the following.

"It features a hard-wired Windows 95-style theme available for both Microsoft Windows itself as well as the X Window System (which is used on many UNIX and UNIX-like operating systems)."

So, there doesn't seem to be a need to port. There is likely a compile configuration to choose the X11 setup.

xstep,

thanks for your input. I had a look into the install disk and i also have the linux installer, would that be of any help?

Do you mean during installation? I never seen an option to choose a X11 installation.

if after installation I am going to dig into the installation manual, and what I can find.

If it is something completely different, where and what should i look at?

Abaqus 6.10.1

From the little bit of research I did, this is not an open source product. Do you have the source code? If not, you can not port the application. Instead, you would need to either emulate it or run the app in a virtual machine.

vansmith,

at the moment I am running out of a virtual machine, but I would rather use that space for work, instead than allocating it to a virtual machine.

how can i emulate?

I was under the impression this was open source, but now it is sounding otherwise. If it isn't, then you likely only have install options. The company should be able to tell you which platforms are actually supported and documentation on how to set it up.

I don't have anything further to add.

Agreed. The company itself should be assisting you with this process.

Ask them if virtualization is a viable option. If it is, we'd be more than glad to help you with that.

Maybe - it depends on the distribution of Linux you used. There's also the question of how well it runs on Linux compared to the Windows version.
