Unwanted files displayed

Your Mac's Specs
Mac Pro (State of the art in 12/07).
When I access a document by cocking on its icon I get not only that document but others also. In Snow Leopard and its predecessors the file I clicked on was what I got. Now I get a whole set of files. Is there any way to suppress this "improvement"?

System Preferences/ General/ about near the botton: "Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps" - uncheck that.
