Mission control with 1 desktop icon on top ?

mbp 15 2009, mbp 13 2010
just installed lion on another mbp with mission control showing just dashboard and 1 desktop only could not find the '+' to add more desktop. The desktop does not have desktop #. Plain desktop letters with 'desktop' what gives.

Hover your mouse pointer in the upper right corner and the + should appear there. "Desktop" will change to 1, 2, 3, etc. once you have more than 1 added.
