MY wife is ready to replace her '06 Macbook and is looking a the MBA in 13". She has basic computer needs; web browsing, email, storing and organizing music and pictures, syncing her ipod and iphone, etc., and after 5 years has 46 gigs used of her 80 gig HD. I was wondering what you all thought about whether or not the $300 extra to go from 128 to 256 gigs of SSD memory is necessary or worth while for other reasons. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Buy what you can afford. With the high prices being charged for SSDs it won't matter whether you purchase it from Apple or somewhere else. And yes, you can replace the SSD in the Air yourself. The Other World Computing site sells the replacements and has instructions.

Keep in mind that the system memory is the most important option to order for the Air not the SSD. The SSD can be upgraded, but not the system memory. So order the Air with the maximum memory offered - 4 GB.
