"Cypher" Powermac G5 2.3 DualCore QuadroFX4500 23" cinema display
Hi guys
i have a late 2005 dualcore 2.3 G5 & have had a couple of issues lately
i'm getting a few Kernel panics which i think may be down to bad ram but i need to spend more time moving it around to determine exactly which sticks are to blame. my main issue or cause for concern at the moment is the fan on my 7800GT video card. seems to run loudly a lot of the time, not like it used to when the card was new. i'm thinking of getting the quadro fx 4500 as i know where there may be one going spare but i have read that gamers etc should steer away from this card?? not sure why ??
i'm not actually a gamer but i do work the cards pretty hard in photoshop etc so would the 4500 be a good upgrade?
anybody have experience of both/either of these cards?
also i have the seperate power cable you need for the 7800GT, does anybody know it the quadro fx4500 uses the same cable?

hopefully it does :)

Take the card out and give the fan unit a good blowing out with compressed air and see if there is any improvement. If you are really game you might like to try installing a new fan unit which is not too difficult a task ~ just make sure you use Arctic Silver

I have the Quadro FX 4500 Graphics card in my G5 and it's just fine. I'm not sure where you heard gamers should steer away from this card, but it runs all of my games at at least 40-50 FPS at the medium-high settings, and I've never had any problems whatsoever.

When did you get a Powermac G5?...maybe I forgot. Last I remembered...you were messing around with iMac G3's & various G4 computers.

That Powermac G5 setup sounds pretty "sweet"...and getting some pretty nice gaming performance!:)

I got it around the beginning of July, and yes it definitely is "sweet". ;) Runs everything I need it to perfectly, and I haven't had a problem with it yet.

As far as messing around with various G4's and iMac G3's, I just emailed a guy on craigslist about buying a dozen or so iMac G3's all for $25. :D

Yeah...I think I was on vacation at that time...and may have missed any posts you made about your Powermac G5.

Are you buying a dozen or so for $25 each...or all for $25 total?

All for $25 total. At about $2 a piece, I don't see how I could be getting a better deal. I only need to sell one and I'll make my money back plus some. :)
