I felt the need to memory test my MBP after I upgraded the RAM from 4 to 8GB.
It occurred to me that as this is an Intel architecture box I can use the famous MEMTEST86+ utility, which is a free tool and ships as a bootable CD image. In addition to testing the memory, it also reports the cpu type (including generation) and memory timing settings. As it is a bootable CD, just load it in the optical drive and then reboot while pressing the letter C.
