system preferences icon is messed up

On your Desktop... is it an alias? If so, delete it and make a new one.
If not, have you updated your OS since depositing the actual SP icon on your Desktop? If so, that might be an explanation, though I'm not sure of that.
Another thing to try: Get Info, highlight the icon in that window, hit delete to get the default icon back.
