Music in 5.1

Is it possible to listen to music in 5.1 through the surround sound when using an ATV2?

Way... way too many specs to list.
I would imagine if it was encoded in 5.1. The only music I have that's so encoded was a bootleg that I got in a disk image form.

When connecting my iPhone directly to the surround sound by cable it works fine on 5.1, just doesn't seem to work when streaming from my Mac.

That would have to do with the setting for the input on your sound system.

I'd be about 99% sure that all the music on your iPhone is also in stereo only. And you have that input set to use some faux Dolby 5.1 setting. You'll need to do the same for the input you're using for the ATV.
