• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

From what I can tell, a large majority of my Dvd's won't play on my iMac anymore, but some will. All the Dvd's I have are from the same region so i'm sure it's not a region problem. When i put the DVD into my Mac, it just spins and stops a few time (for about 40 seconds), and then spits the DVD out. And when i put one of the DVD's that won't play into my Mac, an icon doesn't show up on my screen like it usually would.
Any chance anyone could help fix this problem and i'm going to university in september and i'm not taking a tv/dvd player, and I want to be able to watch dvd's.

I'd suspect the optical drive. Have you tried the dvd's on another machine?

Could just be dirty -- a shot or two of compressed air might do wonders -- but yes, I suspect the optical drive is going bad also.
