• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

Apple DVD Player can't find external DVD drive

hello
i have recently purchased a LACIE External DVD Drive for my G4 Power Mac, however, when I put a DVD in to play it the DVD Player program gives me an error saying:
There was an initialisation error
A valid DVD drive could not be found (-70012)
Does anyone know how I can intialise my drive so that I can watch DVDs?
I have installed the Toast software that came with the drive, but that is only for burning dvds.
Any help would be appreciated :)

You might need to use Patchburn to force OS X to recognise the drive.
Download it at www.patchburn.de and follow the instructions.

This will also enable burn in iTunes, the Finder, iPhoto & iDVD.

thanks

Thanks for that.
It isn't giving the DVD drive as an option?
Is there somewhere I can add it to the hardware list?
ugh.. is it supposed to be this difficult?

Get the latest DiscRecorder Profile from LaCie.

My LightScribe drive requires a firmware updated not yet released to the public, I can't burn DVD's or CD's (I get an error) but I can make LightScribe discs, at any rate I know they had a firmware update for my specific drive but I had plenty of time messing around with DiscRecorder Profiles.

Good luck!
