• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

Ripping of a DVD

I'm a teacher and i'm trying to make a compilation of video clips to show to the kids how stereotypes are used in movies. My problem is I have an Ibook, with a formac and it's all connected up to a DVD player. Now i can capture the clips beautifully using Imovie 05 but the sound is shocking. It's just noise upon noise. Can anyone tell me what i'm doing wrong? Can i get rid of the formac and capture dvd clips some other way? Sorry but budget is non existant and I can't afford final cut pro.

You could always use Mac the Ripper. It rips DVDs onto your hard drive. You could then use Handbrake to convert the Video_TS and Audio_TS folders that MactheRipper creates to an AVI that you could then Edit with iMovie and burn with iDVD.

Long route, but would work.

Handbrake can convert the DVD directly to AVI, no need to use mac the ripper as well

He's right, Handbrake can rip straight to AVI.

Just remember to give Handbrake time, it usually processes "minute-for-minute", i.e. an hour long DVD will take a solid hour to rip.
