Dual Monitor won't work after upgrading to OS Lion

I upgraded my 2010 Macbook Pro to Lion and now my external monitor will no longer work. I used my external monitor for split screen because I am a graphic designer. I'm connected to the monitor through an HDMI adapter. At first I thought the adapter had broke but now I realize that its an issue with lion. Any ideas or help?
