Extending non-airport networks with airport express

I've looked all over, and despite some allusions to it, I can't find a single concise answer anywhere - Is it possible to use the airport express to extend a non-airport network?
If so, what type of hacks are necessary, and how does one go about performing these?
I've got a Viewsonic WR100 and an airport express. I can get the express to join the Viewsonic network without a problem, but I'd like them to be a bit more intimate (rowr!).

Apple claims the AE can only extend the wireless network if you use an Airport Extreme BS.

I'm having the same problems with a d-link dsl 604+ wireless router/dsl modem. I can see the Airport Express on a separate network and the Airport Express can see the dsl 604+ to set the MAC address but it won't update the IP or Subnet Mask and if I change them manually the Airport Express disappears from the network and I have to reset it to start again.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think you can because the Apple Extreme's use a protocol for WDS that other wireless manufacturers do not (or if they do they don't work well together).
