Emptying Trash

When I click on empty trash, a pop up counts items to empty, but thats all it does, trash doesn't empty. How can I get the trash emptied? Thanks for any input. I just installed Lion OS, could that be a problem??

This works, copy and paste this in terminal

rm -rf ~/.Trash/*

Another suggestion of holding the option key down when selecting empty trash worked too. Thanks for input. Van
