Experts: OS X now much more secure than rivals

Consultants with several computer security firms say that Wednesday's release of Mac OS X Lion makes it "king of the jungle" in terms of mainstream operating system security, surging ahead of rivals such as Windows 7 and Ubuntu Linux with very signifiant security overhauls throughout the OS, reports The Register, including a robust implementation of ALSR, sandboxing of vulnerable processes, and locking down web interactions....

I suspected as much. Between this and the massive OpenGL performance improvements, if I ever start playing modern games on my Mac again, I may have to give more serious thought to upgrading.

It's nice to know that Apple's conscious effort to improve security during the development cycle has paid off. I'm particularly pleased with the greater pervasiveness of sandboxing and this is perhaps why the following made my nerd-self smile: "Apple has decreed that all applications submitted to the Mac App Store must be sandboxed, starting in November" (source).

“I generally tell Mac users that if they care about security, they should upgrade to Lion sooner rather than later," Dai Zovi said, "and the same goes for Windows users, too.”

Personally I also like support for encrypted external drives and the full volume encryption of FileVault 2.

Maybe I'm overly optimistic, but I really hope Apple continues to keep ahead of the game when it comes to security. Weak scare ware like MacKeeper don't bother me none. If that is as bad as it gets with Mac OS, I'll be a happy camper. :)
