Apple DVD player

When I insert a DVD, my Mac sits and grinds away for a while and then spits the DVD out again. I can open the DVD player, but the DVD doesn't show up. I tried looking for some help - like look in the DVD folder and take out preferences but there is no folder, just the app. I have OS 10.6.8 and and the DVD player is 5.4. I've looked for an update but cant find any.

Any Suggestions? Thanks :)

Have you tried different DVDs? I have found some media just won't read on my computer.
