Google 'pushing hard' to update Chrome for Lion

chromelogo-new.jpg
Google is in the middle of updating Chrome to better support OS X Lion, says the company's senior VP for the browser, Sundar Pichai. Reports note that while Chrome technically works on Lion, there are glitches with the scrollbar, gesture-based navigation, and operating in fullscreen mode. Some fixes are already available through Canary test builds, and a polished update is coming, according to Pichai....

I don't think I'll be upgrading to Lion until this fall...alongside iOS 5.

I'm running the latest Canary build here (just installed the update) and don't notice much different. It would be great to get some gestures for navigating pages so I hope Google pushes out these changes to the Canary build as soon as they're ready.

@Van:

Have you tested the latest build of Opera on Lion yet?

No, surprisingly. I'm going to get it right now. Thanks for reminding me! (I always forget a few things when I do clean installs).

EDIT: A quick test of both the stable (11.50) build and "Opera Next" seems to be positive - both run well out of the box. I haven't gone too deep but all signs point to no major problems thus far.

OK, thanks. I downloaded 11.50 but haven't had time to play with it yet.

I find it odd that a company the size of Google, with all their resources, couldn't have a Lion compatible final build out the day Lion launched. That's just sad.

It works just fine on Lion. Improvements are coming to make better use of the features that are now available to it.

Ok. Same comment applies. Not like Google isn't a developer and didn't have the resources to have all those features enabled from day 1. They simply chose not to.

Fair enough. To be fair though, the browser still works perfectly fine (ie. nothing is functionally broken) and they have to support multiple branches of code (so their efforts are split between different versions).

It would also be unfair to say that their integration with Lion should be as good as Apple's considering that the only applications that leverage the technologies in Lion right now are Apple's own applications. To say that Google should have been ready would only really be an issue if the app didn't work on day one (which it does).

To be fair, let's qualify this and say browsers. There is plenty of software out there specifically built or modified to take advantage of Lion's technologies.

Other than "Lion ready" and Apple applications, how much software right now uses tech specific to Lion? I'm genuinely curious since I haven't heard of much.

I'm so confused. People are mad at Google because from day 1 their browser is functioning perfectly on Lion just as it does on Snow Leopard?

I am using Chrome as I type this! I haven`t noticed any problem at all! it`s working perfectly. One thing I notice is that Chrome show the vertical scroll! I hope they get rid of it!

I'm not mad personally (don't use Chrome nor do I care to), it just seems that a company like Google, who is an Apple developer, could have had their product on the market from day 1. Other vendors who make Mac software, most with far less users or resources than Google, managed to ensure their software was compliant or have some version that took advantage of the new features within 24 hours of Lions launch.

Googles claim of "pushing hard" seems a bit disengenuouse at best.

I've found chrome to be a bit glitchy since I moved over to lion, there is a full screen option but once chrome is full screen there doesn't appear to be a button to return to in screen

I noticed this as well. I just updated Chrome today and now there doesn't seem to be a fullscreen button anymore. >_>?
