How to make back up and restore

Hi all,
i need to back up my hard drive(using mac mini v 10.6.4) fully as dmg format for restore purpose. i heard its possible with Disk Utility. Can u explain the complete process for making hard drive image and restoring.
i succeeded in making backup as dmg with Disk utility but can't restore it...
Please help....

The problem with a disk image is that restoring the hard drive requires booting from the install DVD or another hard drive to launch Disk Utility. That's not always a convenient option.

What exactly are you trying to do? If you are just trying to produce a "bootable" copy of your hard drive it is probably best to use something like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to image or "clone" the hard drive to an external drive.

Edit: Cloning can also be done using the Restore pane in Dusk Utility.
