Help with MacBook Pro to TV hook up

I recently bought all the equipment to display my Mac onto my Samsung flat screen TV. Got the HDMI cable and the converter that plugs into my Macbook and starting to set everything up. Once I plugged everything up, I changed to the source channel for the HDMI port I was using and it only half worked. Displayed on the TV was the default wallpaper for Mac's but not my screen. I think I'm doing everything right but still no luck...Any help out there?

It's on extended desktop.

1. Go to System Preferences
2. Click on Display
3. Tick the box Show displays in menu bar
4. Click on the TV at the top bar and click Turn on mirroring.
