I really want an iMac but i think the hardware you get with them for the price is ridiculous.
I have built my last 3 windows computers from strach and this has proven to be cheaper and gave me better computers than the market could do at the time, there for lasting longer before the need to upgrade. But i have looked and seen mac's and always loved the look and use of them, more so with the new iMac.
So i've came here to ask if anyone knows of anywhere i could buy the outer iMac case/monitor with no hardware inside, so that then i can re-build it with my own hardware?
Any help or time given I am grateful for.
Thank you!

First I reckon you've never looked at the price of parts that would fit into an iMac or a Dell or HP or Sony All-in-one. Think you'll find that you're not going to find the parts or it will cost you just about as much as if you bought an off-the-shelf from any of these manufacturers.

Along with the fact that the discussion of hackintoshes is not permitted in this forum. OS X may only be installed on Apple hardware.

Welcome to the forum, but your logic is really VERY seriously flawed. That's an LED-backlit, IPS (<--technical talk for "best of the best") monitor in there. You can't find one from ANYONE in the 27" size for less than a grand. That means you're getting the whole rest of the package for $700. Give me a break, there's NO pc out there that's even REMOTELY a better value for money for $700.

Then you add in the superior engineering and design, Firewire 800, MiniDisplayPort, *THUNDERBOLT* fer pete's sake -- ONLY the fastest connection in the world -- built-in high-quality webcam, the *incredible* iLife software, oh and I almost forgot ... an operating system that actually works and is a joy to use. Have you even tried one of these things? They're *unbelievable.*

Nope, sorry, you're simply wrong here. The iMac is an exceptional value to people who understand value. Sadly not everyone does.

iMac rocks

I just got my iMac 3 weeks ago and can not believe this machine. I wish I had made the move sooner. Jump in the water is fine, and remember "iMacs just works".

Building a Macintosh from scratch is illegal most of the time, unless you're designing for apple, of course:Angry-Tongue:. I would consider buying used or refurbished, if not that a new one. They can handle alot of data passing through the system no matter witch make you get. Macs last YEARS without breaking. That's all i have to say

With Apple it's more about the integration of everything, not just specs. It seems like it does more with less compared to Windows. My MBP is over three years old and it's just as fast as they day I got it. I know that my old Windows machine started slowing down sooner than that. It's on pretty much all the time and I render and transcode a lot of video very regularly. The only problem I ever had with it was when the defective NVIDIA chip finally kicked the bucket, but those chips were used in many computers at the time. Apple fixed it quickly, no charge for shipping or labor or anything.

While this would be an interesting mod, you have almost NO chance of this working.

The computers you have been building contain parts conforming to the ATX standard. Apple parts are proprietary (unique) form factors. This means they are specifically designed for the cases they are built in.

Also, you would have to build it using laptop parts. significantly more difficult to find than desktop ATX parts. then theres the fact you would have to splice a screen into the case.which means running a DVI connector through your case into the back of the motherboard unless you are particularly savvy with electronics. This in turn equals crappy cooling due to awful cable management and airflow, and there is NO chance of you water cooling in the shell so forget about it. Cable Management is a PITA in a windows system. think what it would be like with such little space.

Also, the stock Intel heat sink is thicker than an iMac actually is. And thats a small HS.

you would have to cut holes in the casing to accommodate I/O, which would look minging, require specialist tools and so on, plus you would have the old holes from the iMacs old I/O.

AND it would cost you more. IPS panel = megabucks.

AND there are many other flaws in this plan.

Sorry to pick your idea apart, but it is impossible to do well. unless you can manufacture motherboards.
