OK, how do you turn off a 'hung' iPad2?

A couple of hours ago my wife was trying to send an e-mail from her iPad. The e-mail has not 'gone' (as far as we can tell), the screen has gone black except for a small spinning circle in the cneter.

Pressing once, repeatedly, or continuously on the Home button accomplishes nothing - the circle continues to spin on a black screen.

Pressing once, repeatedly, or continuously on the On/Off button accomplishes nothing - the circle continues to spin on a black screen.

Any ideas, other than waiting until the battery is drained and it dies for lack of power?

Try a reset. Home button and power button at the same time.

To clarify firesidedog's answer, the home and sleep button must be pressed AND HELD at the same time for a few seconds.

Just pressing the sleep/wake and home buttons briefly will only take a picture of your screen.
