this is my first post here on mac forums iv had a mac book for a little over a year now im in my second semester of college. i use my mac every day and run her hard and the 2gigs of memory arent fast enough for me. i looked at the apple website and saw that 4 gigs of memory are $200 i said eff that. so im asking you guys what your suggestions would be. are there any other online retailers out there that have spring 2010 macbook memory for less than 100 bucks? id like to have 4 gigs of total ram.

No, because the 2 GB of memory you have is: 2 x 1 GB modules populating both slots. That means you have to pull both 1 GB modules and replace them with 2 x 2 GB modules. As recommended by moderator bobtomay, go to OWC for the memory.

It's pretty easy. I have an early 2011 MBP. I went from 4 GB to 8 GB. I also bought the memory for my portable at OWC. If you do a little quick looking on the website you will find Video that demonstrates how to change out the memory. (I think they have it for a lot of different models.)

That's what I did to change mine out. I think it is pretty easy for most folks. I work for an electronics company and so used our benches that have wrist ground straps etc. It's important to eliminate any static to prevent damage to the memory.

Is it recommended using the OWC ram? I noticed apple sells 1333 MHz ram while OWC sells 1066 MHz. Will it affect performance?

OWC also sells 1333Mhz memory.

You need to buy memory that matches your MacBook specs. And if you have a 2010 MacBook, that would be 1066 because that's the fastest any memory is going to run in that machine.

Start at this page and pick out "your model".

Thanks bobtomay.

Would it be the same performance from OWC as it would from Crucial? They seem to be right about the same price. I don't know very much about RAM so this would help me out a lot. I really don't want to pay 200 dollars just to upgrade the ram through apple when I do buy my mac.

Crucial & OWC would be the top 2 most recommended companies at this forum.

OWC "may" be better at customer service if you ever need it "after the fact". At least they try hard at it.
