I finally have my Atv2 up and running and want to use Airplay on my iPad. How do I enable AirPlay on the iPad (first gen)?

If you're talking about streaming from your Mac, simply go to settings, iPod, home sharing. You'll need to putt in your Apple ID and password. Then, when you're in the Video or iPod app, you'll see a 'shared' tab and from there you can stream.

Depending in your wifi network, this will either be awesome or horrible. But, don't dispair, when Lion comes out, this will actually stream peer to peer rather than via your router, which slows things down if there are a lot of wifi signals around.

Maybe I'm confused about what the iPad and Atv can do together. I thought if you were watching a movie on the iPad or using an app like ABC tv or HBO2GO, you could use AirPlay to watch that movie on the ATV.

So if I am in front of the tv, how do I tell the iPad to show what I'm watching on the ATV?

While you're watching the iPad video, press the screen and you'll see a symbol next to the play and forward icons that looks like an arrow going into a box. This is the airplay symbol. Press this, and it will give you an option to transmit to the AirPlay device, as long as you've already done the prior two steps I mentioned.

And I'd really like to know if HboGo can be streamed to the ATV. If so, I'm convinced.

Yes, but you still need a cable subscription, which makes it kinda pointless. I'd be more than happy to pay for HBO, but not the cable channels you need to get that far.

Ok thanks. I will try that. Right now I'm trying to figure out how to get the Atv connected because I have a few other things plugged in.

Your cable provider doesn't offer an HBO package?

Got ya. So do you use Netflix on your ATV?

I use a mix of Hulu plus, Netflix and iTunes. As soon as Hulu plus is available on the ATV, it will take center stage. For now, I use a Mac Mini for all three.

And NO...

you cannot stream HBOGO to an ATV2 except sound only.

nor Hulu

nor practically any other video source that's not in your iTunes library.

Looks like back to a HTPC for me.

I might have a ATV2 for sale soon. It's got 3 hours on it right now.

1/2 hr, jailbreak and airvideoenabler later and no dice - just an "error occurred loading this content".

Now the question, Am I willing to spend another $30 for the iPad video adapter in hopes that will work?

Try AirFlick and see if that provides an adequate workaround. Didn't care for it myself, largely because any media that is not ATV-compatible has to be transcoded on-the-fly.

So I've always wondered, does the ATV allow you to watch movies/videos etc from a windows box? Currently my PS3 will do this but I was thinking of purchasing the ATV for my basement.
I use Airvideo to stream from my windows box to my Ipad and was hoping the ATV would do the same.
