Iphoto importing issues

My friend let me put some of the pictures he took onto a flash drive so I could load them into my iphoto library. If I try to add them to my library straight off the flash drive it works, but if I copy the photos to my hard drive and then import them it says they can't be imported because it's either not a valid file type or the data is not valid. But I know the data is valid and that the photos are JPEGS, since I can load straight off my hard drive. what gives?

If you drag and drop them into iPhoto, aren't they there the next time you run iPhoto?
