My Macbook Pro appears on my home network, I can see it on my PC but I can not see any shared machines/drives on my mac. I have been able to in the past. I was using a free avast anti virus but have disabled it and I have the mac firewall switched off
Any bright ideas?

I'm not really al that great at this stuff, though I usually don't have any problems getting my own stuff working.

Open up Finder, head for the Go menu, Connect to Server

All I do from there is put in smb://sharename

Maybe see this page - section on joining a MS workgroup.
