.avi files in quicktime

everytime I download an .avi file into quicktime, it never works. Just a white screen, sometimes with music. Could somebody help me.

MB Pro, 2.66 GHz Intel Core, Mac OS X Lion NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT 512 MB 8GB 1067 MHz DDR3 2 Duo,
I've encountered the same problem in the past and now use VideoLan Client (VLC) to play .avi files. Also after looking for some other programs I came across MPlayer OS X. It seems to be legitimate.

Hi! It works great with the divx plugin. Just download the plugin and you will be able to play avi files. Good luck ;)
