Can't update 2nd gen iPod touch to 4.2

I haven't plugged my iPod into the computer for 2 years, and now, so many apps require 4.0 iOS or higher, so I decided to update my iPod touch. When I try, it says it can't restore. I have the latest version of iTunes, and I've restarted my computer Now I'm lost and don't know what to do. Can anyone help me?
