Hey - I inherited a Mac Pro running OX server 10.5.8. I don't need to run this machine as a server and want to install leopard (non server version) (and then lion).

I tried just running the leopard install disk but that didn't work. What do I need to do to be able to 'downgrade' from server version but 'upgrade' to Leopard.

Any advice very gratefully received.

Texas, where else?

Spend the $29 to get a retail copy of Snow Leopard.

A disc from some other machine is not going to work.

(Retail copies of Leopard are running $100 and more in the used market. And, if you do manage to get a copy of it that is older than the MP, it won't work either.)

"Didn't work" does not give us much to go on.

And, Leopard - Snow Leopard are two separate operating systems, terms not interchangeable.

Yeah sorry - my mistake.

Thanks for your patience. I'm new to this stuff.

I tried to install Snow Leapard (retail disc) and got the message 'Mac OS X 10.6 can't be installed over Mac OS X server'

(Am assuming you have an Intel Mac and not a PPC Mac. SL will not install if this is an older PPC machine. 10.5 is as high as it will go.)

OK, you'll need to boot from the SL disc. After you select your language, you'll have the menu at the top of the screen.

Head for Utilities - Disk Utility - then the partition tab. Partition the drive and format using OS X Extended (Journaled). Once that's done you should be good to continue the installation.

Yes - Intel Mac. OK - so far so good - am in the partition menu and all going according to plan. Any advice on the relative size of each partition. It's a 500 GB drive.

I'm having the same issue

Bringing this one back from the dead. I am currently using an iMac with OS X 10.5.8 Server at work. We do not use this machine as a server. I would like to use the upgrade disc we purchased for 10.6.1 Snow Leopard, but am receiving the same error message. I tried booting from the install disc to no avail. My HD is already partitioned for Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Is there any other way to upgrade to Snow Leopard without erasing my HD?

I should add, I do have a retail disc for Leopard 10.5.1. Can I downgrade from OS X Server to Leopard first?
