Bluetooth earbuds not connecting

MacBook Pro 13 inch, 2020
I'm not sure if this is the right section, but since bluetooth is wireless, I figured it was. I just got the Jaybird Freedom earbuds and paired them with my macbook pro. It says that they are paired, but not connected. Is there another setting that I need to check? Thanks
