To try and answer the question, it's going to be a 4GB download. Since I do not know the speed of your internet connection, I have no idea how long it will take to download.

Can you tell us a bit more about the speed of your internet?

If you get a full 5Mbps, that's a max of about 600k/sec, so a ballpark guess would be about 2 hours. (600k/sec x 60 sec/min x 60 min/hr =2.16gb/hr)

Remember...when Lion is released...tons & tons of people will be downloading it at the same time...so the servers Apple has established for the downloads will more than likely be...VERY VERY busy!

It won't matter how fast of an internet connection any individual has...since the slowdown will be on Apple's end. Thus...who knows how long it will take initially to download Lion...it could take 10 hours...maybe more!:(

This is going to be the first time Apple has tried this (downloadable OS upgrade/release)..maybe it will go smoothly...maybe not. You've heard of iPad shortages (iPad 1 and iPad 2)...so Apple isn't always perfect!;)

I come up with 107 minutes - if you get a full and steady 5Mbps download, and that includes converting the 4GB to 32Gb.

Nick, that is also an excellent point. I was thinking of posting it but thought it might scare the OP away! :D Grin

The Apple Servers will be getting Hammered so who knows how slow the download will be. :D

Thanks...hopefully I'm wrong...and downloads of Lion go "hitch-free".:) I know Apple must have tons of server capacity running the Apple Store, iTunes, App. Store, etc...but jeez...if everyone tries to download Lion at the same time...:(

I'd say that the download would be slow but in my experience, Apple has been pretty good at getting me content from their servers rather quickly. For instance, the 10.x.x updates all down relatively quickly and I usually get them the day they're released. That said, who knows how well this will go - 4GB is a much larger download than normal.

For the OP, there are too many contingencies to give you an accurate estimate. Just download it when you have lots of time available (which you should do anyway when you upgrade the OS).

Hope this isn't too off topic but.......

How do we think this download will work, when we have a problem with a program or OS X itself where the solution now is:

"Insert OS X disc to fix this issue"

Could be where someone has deleted a program by mistake or, they need to repair something.

Hope that makes sense!

Neil
