I regularly use Skype, especially for incoming calls via an online number.

I use the slider in the Input section of Sound in System Preferences to set my level to maximum, using an iSight on Firewire.

Every time I check, the level defaults to somewhere in the middle, so that people can't hear me properly until I set it again, for each call. Why doesn't it just keep it the way I set it?

I am using Skype 5.1.0.93 whatever and it seems to be retaining the setting. I don't use Skype much so I had to check. With both the internal mic and a USB headset the sound pref pane shows maximum for the Input level even if I close and reopen Skype.

My system is retaining my setting too, though I don't use Skype. Try deleting the pref file for System Preferences. It may be corrupt.
  • yourhomefolder/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist

Holler back if that works, or doesn't.
