My son just got a MacBook Pro and is having trouble connecting to our home NAS a 250Gb Simpleshare running 1.9 firmware. He just upgraded OSx to the latest Snow Leopard release.

The drive mounts fine using SMB://Simpleshare and displays the 4 shares we have on the NAS. However, if he clicks on his share it refuses to take his ID and password. "The alias "server name" could not be opened...original item not found." If I remove the password requirement in Samba administration, then he gains access to all his data in the share without problem.

How best to diagnose why security cannot be passed?

Closer than you think.
Your Mac's Specs
Performa 6116 2GBSCSI 8MB OS 7.5.3
Does the NAS support AFP?

If so, enable it and connect the Mac via AFP.

If it's Samba only..you might want to try
Code:
smb://user@server/share_name
Then enter the password when requested and it should mount..
