My father currently runs an Apple G4 and backups up to an external drive using time machine. I think the OS X is snow leopard and possibly time machine is leopard!

Anyhow, he is about to get an Imac i3 and is wanting to transfer the time machine backup from his G4 onto his new i3. As the G4 is non-intel etc... will there be any problems transferring?

Yes with drivers etc. Suggest he do a Migration Assistant transfer and many applications will not be compatible, such as Office 2004, early Firefox etc. Really think the best suggestion is a clean install of freshly downloaded applications from the 'net and from software CD's.

An Apple G4 can not run Snow Leopard so it must be Leopard if he has Time Machine running.

There should be no problem migrating his data, apps, and settings using Time Machine. As soon as he boots the new iMac for the first time, it will ask if he wishes to transfer data from another Mac. No system files will be overwritten, just the apps, data, settings, music, photos, etc. will be transferred to the new iMac.
