Can't re-install Office 08 on MacBook

I have the "Office: Mac 2008 Home&Student Edition" disc with three licenses. I was having difficulty with the updates so I contacted Microsoft and went through a process that eventually led to my uninstalling Office 08 and all of its files. When I try to re-install with the disc, the icon mounts on the desktop, I click on it and the yellow window with the setup assistant pops up. It says to double click to install, I do and the disc sounds as if it it will progress, but nothing further happens. Microsoft isn't helping and I need to get this fixed for work and school ASAP!

Are you sure you completely uninstalled Office 2008? Did you use the Office uninstaller or did you do it manually? Office 2008 put files in many places which sometimes do not get removed by the uninstaller.

Also, you state that you were having problems with the Office 2008 updates. What kind of problems?

And, have you installed any software that removes languages or code from the machine? Monolingual is one such app that removes languages and code.

Lastly, did you install Snow Leopard? Sometimes an upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard will not carry over the Rosetta installer and Office 2008 will not install without Rosetta.

The Microsoft customer service agent did not have me use an uninstaller, but gave me directions on where to look for all files.

I couldn't update to the newest version, 12.9.1, I think it might have been. Kept saying I was missing something for the update.

Yes! I thought that might have had something to do with MacKeeper which did remove languages. I got rid of it now tho. Office 2004 installed fine today tho, no problem??

I have had snow leopard since it came out, so no recent updates, but I did add Rosetta after reading an article when I was looking for possible solutions to my issue today

If you removed languages from your machine, Office 2008 will refuse to install any updates nor will it even install. I made that same mistake several years ago when I installed Monolingual and removed most languages with the exception of English.

And please get rid of MacKeeper. It's the worst kind of junk ware and does not work. It just causes trouble as you found out.

You will need to download the combined 10.6.7 update from Apple. That will get your system back to normal, after which Office 2008 and updates should install OK.

I am already updated to that. I tried to re-update and it gave a failure notice. Any thoughts??

Can I use my snow leopard disc and then re-update? I;m on satellite internet as well so I can't download huge file (like updates) at home... (I get 400MB per day of download only! Sucks!)

I guess you have no choice. The Snow Leopard DVD will do a reinstall, but you will have to download the updates manually. Your Snow Leopard DVD will only overwrite system files, it will not remove or write over documents, applications, music, photos, etc.

But that still leaves you with the problem of having to download updates for both Snow Leopard and Office 2008. Your connection daily maximum will easily be exceeded. Can't you borrow someone's broadband? Go to Starbucks, your public library, etc?
