If you have no Google software on your machine, it's possible that GoogleSoftwareUpdate is still around and is having issues since there is no Google software to update. If you go to <your HD>/Library/Google, there will be a folder called GoogleSoftwareUpdate. This is where the updater resides. To uninstall it, Google doesn't provide a nice and neat method - you're going to have to do this with the Terminal. Open up Terminal (/Applications/Utilities/) and enter the following:
