Hi all.

My friend's Macbook Pro's hard drive has failed. Is it possible to buy them a new hard drive and install the appropriate OS on it?

Thanks!

Welcome to the Mac Forums.

Yes, it's possible. Make sure you purchase the correct drive. It has to be a SATA drive 2.5" x 9.5 mm. Can be either 5400 RPM or 7200 RPM.

Thanks for the quick reply & welcoming me. :)

I have a very dumb question and it will just show that I'm a Windows user. haha
I have installed plenty of Windows versions on hard drives using CDs and ISOs.

Would there be a way to download OSX off of the Mac website? I don't want to do anything illegal.

Thanks for dealing with my very newbie questions!

If you do not want to do anything illegal go and purchase Mac OS X.6 Snow Leopard as there is simply no way to download the OS unless through pirate sites.

The last time I checked Snow Leopard was $29 so not that costly.
