I have had my macbook for about 2 years now, no problems (except a new battery) and I love it. I have quickly run out of free space on the hard drive (have about 30GB) left and I can really tell a difference in speed.

I was wondering what I can do that is very easy and cost efficient way to updgrade.

You can either:

- purchase a larger hard drive for your MacBook and install it...but then eventually you may run into the same problem in the future (a full hard drive).
- download/offload some of the less frequently used files from your MacBook to an external hard drive (photos, videos, music, etc.).
- delete some of the apps. & files you almost never use on your MacBook to free up space.

I'm thinking about getting an external hard drive for back ups/storage and then adding the max amount of memory, Will this help make it run like new??

And from here on in make regular backups. Time Machine is great for this. Being 2 yrs old you have been lucky not to loose any data, so get a Ext in the 1TB region as they are cheap enough now and back up continuously. We see too many thread here in the forum with member asking how to recover data without a backup and it usually cant be done or can cost a lot of money.

Cheers

Pick out a 2.5" 9.5mm HDD. The amount of space and how fast the drive is up to you. Cost more for faster and more space obviously.

Then go to the link that pigoo3 kindly provided and find your machine, and there should be a guide on how to replace the HDD, as well as any tools that are needed.

Go to iFixit.com...and review the hard drive replacement procedure...as suggested!!!

When you're asking for help over the internet...only so much "hand-holding" is possible. Eventually you gotta get in there with both hands.;)

You should already have your hard drive backed up before it dies and you lose everything!!!

And then you'll have your backup before you get started.

You need two drives at this point. One to replace your internal drive and one for backup. It does not do a whole lot of good to backup your internal drive if most of your data is stored on a single external drive. What happens when that external dies?

If you go to the OWC site posted as links in previous posts you will see that along with the new drive they can provide a kit that has an external enclosure and cloning software so you can clone your old drive before making the switch.

Yes...that would probably be a great idea!

Kinda like asking...should I put on the parachute before jumping out of the plane!;)
