I am trying to empty the trash, but a few things won't delete. I keep getting a messgae that says:

The operation can’t be completed because the item “vlc-1.1.10 20-22-53.dmg” is in use.

I am also getting that for a few other things that I downloaded.

DMGs will create those errors if they are still mounted. Take a look on your desktop for a VLC mounted disk (icon on the far right here) and eject it by dragging it to the Trash or right clicking it and selecting eject.

I think when I tried to eject it earlier, it wound up deleting vlc. Is that possible? It's my first day with a mac, so I'm a little slow. Thanks

You have to drag the apps out of the mounted disk image into your Applications folder. Take a look at this guide to get a better sense of how you should install applications.

Thanks, that worked. Also, I downloaded echofon for mac, but i like the firefox addon better. How do I uninstall a program like I would on a pc? I thought I deleted echofon by dragging it into trash, but the icon is still on the top of the screen

It's probably because it's still running. Quit it and you should be fine.
