Ayo I was just browsing through my local craigs list ads and came a across a add for a brand new powerbook g4 with the hyper threaded processor. I contacted the seller and he said he would like to get $800.

I feel this is a great deal as these go for $1000+. Its got the new G4 processor running at 1.67 ghz which should be insanely fast and I plan to upgrade the ram.

What do you guys think ?

I personally would not bother with that machine for that price. I love keeping older macs running as much as the next guy but the G4 chip is a bit long in the tooth. Haven't checked them out in detail but there are some Intel Macs on eBay for that amount and it is a much newer processor.

Do you have a link to the Craigslist posting? Something sounds really wrong with this deal.

A G4 is a old Power PC CPU and NOT Hyper Threaded at all.

Ayo I was just browsing through my local craigs list ads and came a across a add for a brand new powerbook g4 with the hyper threaded processor.

I have no idea where you're located (assuming the United States)...but there are so many things wrong in your original post...I'm not sure where to start!;)

First of all...there's absolutely no way that it's "new"...since the last Powerbook G4 was discontinued back in April, 2006...that's over 5 years ago!!! At best...this is a 5+ year-old computer that's still in it's original box & never opened. But even this is highly unlikely.

Hyper-threading...come on...no G4 computer Apple sold had "hyper-threading"!

I contacted the seller and he said he would like to get $800.

I feel this is a great deal as these go for $1000+. Its got the new G4 processor running at 1.67 ghz which should be insanely fast and I plan to upgrade the ram.

Hey if you think that this is a great deal...then go for it. But if this is really a Powerbook G4...it's not worth more than $250 (at best).

What do you guys think ?

Well...seems to me you need to do some additional research on Macintosh computers so that you have a better understanding how old a Powerbook G4 is...and what the appropriate value is for a 5+ year-old Apple laptop computer.

Yeah...either:

* there's a lot of beer drinking going on;)
* you think that we don't know our Macintosh computers!:(
* you don't know your Macintosh computers:(
* or you're just trying to start trouble:(

Brand new in the original box, never been opened.

I would post the link to the craigs list posting but i don't want any of you to snatch the deal.

I can guarantee you that no one here wants that machine.

We're trying to help here by pointing out that this deal is either a scam or the seller has no idea what they're selling and the value of the machine.

Actually yes it will be. Its going to be a upgrade actually. Moving from dual core to hyper threading. Funny thing is a piece of metal someone got sucked in by the fan and shorted on the macbook and it started smoking. The extent of the fire was pretty small.

Trust us, the knowledge in here is far greater than the knowledge possessed by the seller (assuming (s)he is actually legitimate). You don't want that machine for that cost.

Thats old technology. The seller told me that his is hyper threaded core processors and that one you listed is dual core.

I'm going to assume that you don't know much about computers...and so I'll be nice & explain this one more time (even though it's already been said multiple times in this thread).

The G4 cpu in a Powerbook G4 is NOT a hyper-threading processor. A G4 cpu is a "single core" processor. Core 2 Duo cpu's...like in older MacBooks & MacBook Pro's...are like having 2 cpu's. Core 2 Duo cpu's do not have hyperthreading either!:

Hyper-threading - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Intel Core 2 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hyper-threading is found in Xeon cpu's (like in Mac Pro desktop computers)...and the new Intel i3, i5, and i7 cpu's.

I think these search results, from your area, will show you how $800 is much to high a price.
