So...I'm seeing a lot of "hard drive caddies" pop up on online stores that are said to be made specifically for MacBooks for SuperDrive replacements...

Well, I have a Santa Rosa MacBook whose SuperDrive refuses to burn, and it's very fussy about when it will read a CD/DVD; so I pretty much exclusively use an external drive for optical media right now...

Has anybody had any experience with these "caddies"?? Do they work well? Are they worth the hassle?

I love mine. With an SSD as a system drive and the HDD for storage its the perfect cost effective combination of speed and size. I just got the cheapest caddie I could find on ebay and it works wonderfully.

Did you just basically do what it says on ifixit.com for replacing the SuperDrive?

So....I got one of these things for my MacBook, and it works great. Only problem is that I couldn't 100% fit the keyboard back on; there's a slight bulge that's really only noticeable if you take the battery out and see that one of the screws cannot go back in. Also, actually had to remove part of the caddy for it to even get in the case....otherwise, wow....nice to have something useful instead of the semi-dead SuperDrive.

Wonder what the power consumption is on these things....

I wanted to do that with my machine, since my SuperDrive has also kind of died on me, but I decided to jsut deal with it because i need a drive internally so i can install windows on the other partition.
