I've had my iMac just over a year - late 2009 21.5", 8GB RAM, 500 GB HD. I've had a couple of Kernel panics in the past but just chalked it up to computers mess up sometimes and it seemed to run fine afterwards. Like I say, 2 or 3 over the course of a year didn't concern me.

But two nights ago I got 2, one while watching an internet video the other while shutting down. Last night when shutting down I got another one. I checked the HD verification and it said it needed repaired so I did that. Should that do the trick do you think? I do have a lot of peripherals - USB Hubs, 2 external HD's, Wacom tablet and MBox Mini, but I've had these pretty much the whole time I've had the Mac.

Kernel Panics are generally caused by hardware glitches. It could have been your hard drive that was giving you the panics. All I can suggest for now is to keep an eye on it and if you do get another KP, copy the panic log to the clipboard and post it here for us to take a look at.

Do you shutdown all your applications before shutting down or not? If not, try closing all applications first (CMD+q) and then shutdown and see if the issue persists..

Are you using virtualbox and parallels at the same time?

After a year or two Parallels was giving Kernel Panics - I finally gave up - completely removed and re-installed and it started doing better. I think it started messing up my Boot Camp partition too. Anyway - I followed this to completely remove it.
KB Parallels: How to remove Parallels Desktop 6 completely
And just re-installed.

I ended up replacing my whole hard drive with a Seagate Momentus XT so I could get some speed up. Parallels is running fine now.

I am using Parallels but not Virtualbox, although I did trial Virtualbov before Parallels. In truth though it's rare I have Parallels running.

Every time this happens, when I check the HD it says it needs repaired and I do so.

Do you still have Virtual box installed? The kernel extensions to both Parallels and Virtual Box are running when it crashes.

I did the same thing - whenever it crashed I would run disk repair on both windows and Mac. Anyway - that is what caused my kernel panics - anytime I was running parallels, with Windows on Bootcamp, and my Norton AV would start doing background tasks - I would get a kernel panic.

I uninstalled VirtualBox, it was just a trial version, but I see in the logs it looks like there's something of it still there. How do I locate these files? Every time it has crashed I haven't been running Parallels.

Here is where the kernel panic is occurring:

BSD process name corresponding to current thread: Mail

I don't believe the kexts referring to VirtualBox are causing the KPs although they should have been removed when you uninstalled VirtualBox.

Anyway, what's going on with your Mail program?

They may not be the direct cause of the kerenl panics but they may be involved. And my first concern was kexts that are installed that aren't doing anything, but directly affect disk - i.e. the virtual machine kexts.

Panics are weird things - that is I have a crash on my iPhone - and Mail keeps showing up in the crash logs - but it was really a cydia jailbreak extension causing the crash - but it was mail thread that was running - so it was showing up just as above.

I mean - maybe you could try shutting down all programs as mentioned before, then shut down.

You could also try to go oldschool unix
Code:
sync
sync
sync
shutdown -h now

(That is voodoo to ensure the file system cleans up before shutdown.)

I don't believe Mail had anything to do with the panic - it just happened to be the last app touched before the crash. Based on the logs above, my guess would be the MBox2 audio device is dying. I've seen several of these devices cause kernel panics when they start to fail. I'd remove it, run for a while and see if things stabilize.

I don't think it's mail, going back through the logs there seems to be a different app each time that gets the "BSD process name corresponding to current thread" message.

I'll be very frustrated if it's the MBox as this is something I use a lot.
