I just received an Ipad as a gift and it won't let me do anything until I connect it to Itunes.

I do not have or want Itunes on my computer; is there a way around this?

Not until this Fall when iOS 5 is released.

You want to do anything, you're going to need iTunes. That's how everything is synced with it.

I'd suggest you install iTunes and check it out first. You just may well be surprised that having iTunes on your machine is worth the trade-off to have an iPad. If not, then sell it.

no, I made sure not to install Itunes on this computer, It's a last resort.

Could I quick install itunes to turn it on and then delete Itunes?

Just curious...what is your concern with iTunes?

Thanks,

I just don't like it. My last experience using it was less than satisfactory and somehow ended up turning all my image files on my computer into unusable quicktime files (which is a problem when you're a digital artist). It also runs way too much background noise in general. Along with its alleged DRM, I'd rather avoid it altogether.

so there's my beef, hoping not to attract to much negativity, just wondering what to do since I don't really want to squander the gift you know?

Download iTunes or sell it.

DRM has been gone from iTunes music for almost 3 years now.

yeah, that's what I read in the news. How much could I get for it? It's been opened, but the plastic hasn't been removed.

iTunes is pretty much the "de facto" program for interfacing with an iPod, iPod Touch, iPhone, or iPad. If you feel that strongly about iTunes...as already suggested...sell the iPad!:(

Kind of hard to estimate...since you haven't told us what model iPad you have!;)

Oh that's right, 16gb, model 1 I think. I could probably net $425-ish.

Does the galaxy tab use itunes?

Still not enough info. If it's an iPad 1.0...there was a 16gig WiFi only version, and a 16gig WiFi + 3G version.

Also realize that Apple stopped selling brand new iPad 1.0's a couple months ago...so be 100% sure this this is a BRAND NEW iPad 1.0...and not an iPad 2.0.

You COULD just put it back in the box, wait about three months, then download iOS 5.

You really should give iTunes another try, however. I cannot explain your experience with it, but to put it mildly hundreds of millions of Mac and PC users (literally!) have not had that experience.

I understand your hesitation. I'm the same with a few things - cough Norton cough AOL cough - Those two will never see the light of day on one of my machines.

I'd still recommend you check it out while you've got it. It'd be a shame to pass up the opportunity to at least check it out and with what's coming with iOS5 this fall... too much good stuff. All you need to do, during the install of iTunes - when it asks if you'd like to make iTunes the default player - say no - this way it will not change any of your existing file associations - which btw are easy to change and requires maybe a minute to do so.

Do you have any friends with iTunes? You can activate it, don't sync - and log into your own iTunes account once it is activated. I did this with my iPad - I activated it with my Mac, but started syncing it with my PC.

The stock seems to be better now so you may not get as much as you might have when the shipping times were 4-5 weeks. Most people get to the store early and get what they want now.
