Hi I am new to mac, having just been given a MacBook by a friend . It has the tiger 10.4 on it. Is it worth me upgrading the operating system?
Thanks in advance

Is it worth me upgrading the operating system?

The big question is...what would an updated OS do for you that the current OS version isn't? When doing something of this nature...you should really have some reasons of your own to require an upgrade.

I can tell you lots of reasons why you should do an OS upgrade...but these reasons may not be any that motivate you.

Great reasons for doing an OS upgrade:

- software you want to use is not compatible with the current OS version
- newer OS versions have features you would like to take advantage of
- newer hardware/peripherals you would like to use require a newer OS version
- etc. etc. etc.

It's like saying..."I have a 2007 Honda Accord...should I upgrade to the 2011 model?" And my question would be..."What's the 2007 model doing or not doing that a 2011 model will do?"

10.4 no longer gets security updates from Apple, and hasn't for over a year.

If you value the privacy or security of your system, upgrade.

Upgrade to Snow Leopard is the way to go.

Since you say it is a MacBook that would mean it's an Intel-based processor.

If that is the case, the only sane thing to do is upgrade to Snow Leopard. Running anything else on an Intel machine is nuts.

I'd recommend the Mac Box Set, which gets you Snow Leopard plus the latest iLife and iWork for one low price ($150ish). Also, max out the RAM if you can.

You have to be already running 10.6 in order to upgrade to 10.7, which is coming out next month. Luckily, it's only $30.
