Moving Folder to External USB HDD

Hi folks,

New to mac so bear with me please.

I dumped 16Gb of photographs onto my MacBook Pro while shooting a wedding at the weekend into a folder within PICTURES.

Now, I plugged in my USB 250Gb Hard Disk to transfer all the files over to my main studio PC which is windows 7 based as I have not yet raised the funds for a new iMac in the studio but getting there.

However the 250Gb portable drive is being seen but as Read Only.

How can I copy the files over to the external drive?

I figure it is soem sort of ownership or sharing thing, but cannot figure out how to do it?

[edit] The USB drive is formatted as NTFS and i would like to be able to use it for transferring files between MBP and Windows 7 based PC in studio.

Will "assume" your external is formatted as NTFS. Natively, OS X can read but not write to NTFS. I'll also assume you don't want to reformat the external drive to FAT32.

I highly recommend Paragon's NTFS for Mac.

There are a couple of free ways which I am sure others will pipe up about, but I still use the above.

I can reformat the drive to FAT32 no problem with that, but will need to remove the stuff from it first.

I am unsure of the workings of Mac yet, hence what can appear to be daft questions but will get there.

If I format to Fat32 will that then allow me to plug and play so to speak the USB drive and transfer files between the mac and the windows based machine until I get the iMac in the studio?

Sure. Both your Windows machines and your Mac can read and write to FAT32. Only issue is FAT32 is limited to no file larger than 4GB. If you're not using it for videos this should not be an issue.

Hi mate, thanks for that, I will format the drive to FAT32 then and use it like that.

Not using it for video and if so I have couple other drives that can access larger files etc.

THe files off the camera are 25Mb RAW files so will be fine.

If the folder however is 16Gb will this cause an issue?

No, the only limitation is on files, not folders.
