Well, problem solved.

Hey that's totally awesome!!!:) I'm sure there are other Mac Pro 1,1 owners out there thinking of upgrading to the 5770...but are concerned with compatibility.

Also thanks a million for the update...great to hear a happy ending!:)

Wow thanks for the update. I had made up my mind that when I upgrade I would keep the old card around to use for diagnostics assuming the old card did not die first.

Don't feel bad about missing that troubleshooting step. I once spent about two hours tring to get a mic to work with my G5 tower. Tried about five mics before I remembered that the sound input port on the G5 was a line in connection not mic in.

That is great news OP!

With the HD4870 advised Nick yesterday get full booting into OS X.4.7, Apple Hardware Test, DiskWarrior 4.3 and Sly Tech Tool runs a treat also.

As they say in the classics 'all's well etc'!

That was my second choice for being able to run diagnostics. Thanks for the update.

Presumably, your reminder is that the 5770 is overpowered on a Mac Pro 1,1, when compared to the 4870. You're probably right, and Apple Corp., as an AMD/ATI partner, probably agreed to promote the 5770 instead because it's the current mass production line model, and it's just plain easier to point to a single card as an upgrade to ALL of a "series" (AKA Mac Pro). Hindsight is 20/20, still happy the new card works well. :p
