:( Help My MacBook Pro 17"

I did a update last night and after rebooting it's stuck on the grey screen with the Apple Logo and the spinning gear. I tried to re install the Mac OS X install Disc one which just sits at the same screen. What do I do?

Spec's
MacBook Pro 17"
2.16 intel
2 GB Memory

15" MBP, 2.5GHz i7, 750GB, 6770M 1GB, iPad 3, iPhone 4, custom PC
try booting from the disk (holding C, i believe) and verify and repair the main volume.
